CITES – officially used abbreviation for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. This convention was signed the 3rd March 1973 and it became valid 1st January 1975.

The document determines and adjusts the rules for international trade with endangered species of wild fauna and flora. The trade is one of the most serious reasons, which cause extinction of a lot of species. The convention is carried out in 172 states by means of special offices.
The purpose of CITES is regulation and controlling of international trade with some endangered species. There is about 5 000 kind of animals and 28 000 flora species from the whole world in this time. The convention has three supplements and the species are divided into them in accordance with their degree of exposure of danger.
For example Cyclamen purpurascens, Galanthus nivalis or the tribe Orchideaceae are included in CITES in the Czech Republic.
