Distribution: North American species found from Yukon across most of Canada to state of New York, and along Rocky Mountains south to Arizona and New Mexico. Secondarily it reached Alaska. In its region it divides into three varieties.
Ecology: Nominate variety grows in grasslands or rocky slopes, in elevations from 200 to 2300 m. S. e. var. kingii occurs in southern part of its distribution in coniferous forests and disturbed sites, in elevations from 2700 to 3700 m. In similar habitat it is found in Arizona and New Mexico as S. e. var. macdougalii.
Description: Perennial herb, (20–)40–80(–140) cm tall. Stem erect, leaves sessile or petiolate, ovoid to narrowly lanceolate, (3–)6–12(–20) × (1–)1,5–5(–7) cm, bases tapered, margins pinnate to lacerate or dentate. Flower heads 10–60 in compound corymbiform inflorescence, bracts 8–13, 3–8 mm long, tips green or black, ray florets about 8, 5–10 mm long, yellow; disc florets numerous, yellow. Fruit is an achene.
