Family: Primulaceae Vent.
Distribution: Southwestern and Central Europe.
Ecology: It grows in deciduous woods and among bushes, in foothills. It flowers from July to September.
Description: A perennial herb with a globose tuber, 5–12 cm high. The leaves are in basal rosette, petiolate, cordate, leathery, on upper surface dark green with silvery patterning, underside carmine. The flowers are pink to carmine, fragrant. The fruit is a capsule.
Threat and protection: The Purple Sowbread is a protected plant in some countries (A, CH, CZ, D, I), simultaneously is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
